Biotech Entrepreneur | ex-Galagapos / Johnson & Johnson
Paul Stoffels

Dr. Paul Stoffels is a physician, biotech entrepreneur and one of Belgium’s most experienced leaders in global drug development. He began his career as a doctor and HIV researcher in Africa before moving into pharmaceutical R&D, eventually becoming Vice Chairman and Chief Scientific Officer at Johnson & Johnson.

Under his leadership, Janssen’s R&D teams launched more than 25 new medicines across several therapeutic areas. Seven of those were added to the World Health Organization’s Model List of Essential Medicines, medicines selected for their importance to priority healthcare needs worldwide.

His career includes breakthrough work in HIV, tuberculosis and vaccines, as well as leading Johnson & Johnson’s scientific response during the COVID-19 pandemic.

At FTI Leuven, Stoffels will draw on those decades of experience in his talk ‘How to build a winning medicine?’ How do you turn strong science into a medicine that is genuinely better, reach patients faster, and compete globally? And what needs to change if Europe wants to keep developing the medicines of the future?
