Heidi Mertes
Professor of Medical Ethics | Ghent University
Heidi Mertes is a professor of medical ethics at Ghent University and a founding member of the Bioethics Institute Ghent and the interdisciplinary platform METAMEDICA. Her academic research focuses on the ethical implications of innovations in healthcare, with a particular emphasis on reproductive medicine, genetics, embryonic stem cell research, big data, AI and challenges at the intersection of these various fields.
In addition, she is committed to initiatives that stimulate public debate on new medical technology as a board member of the non-profit organisation De Maakbare Mens, and she is, amongst other roles, chair of the Belgian Federal Commission for Medical and Scientific Research on In Vitro Embryos and a member of the Advisory Committee on Bioethics.
